The Allen-Bradley ArmorKinetix distributed servo platform moves the drive out of the control cabinet and onto the machine frame, directly at the motor, in an IP66/IP67-rated housing. Built on the same control engine as the cabinet-mount Kinetix 5700, it targets the same problem packaging and material-handling lines keep hitting: servo axis counts keep climbing while cabinet floor space, cooling capacity, and cable pathways do not.

What does the distributed DC-bus architecture actually save?

A centralized DC-bus supply stays in the cabinet and converts AC mains to a shared DC bus. One hybrid cable runs to each on-machine drive, carrying DC-bus power, 1 Gbit EtherNet/IP with CIP Motion, and motor feedback in a single connector — replacing the three separate cables a cabinet-mount axis needs. One supply feeds up to 24 distributed axes, and Device Level Ring (DLR) on the EtherNet/IP side means a cut cable is a non-event. The alternative — homerunning a full servo cable tray per axis — multiplies cable length threefold and forces a bigger electrical room.

DSD or DSM — which drive variant fits?

This product is the DSD (Distributed Servo Drive): a standalone drive module that connects to a separate VP, MP, or linear servo motor via a short motor cable. Choose DSD when the motor size is set by the application and you want the drive mounted nearby on the same machine member. The alternative, DSM, wraps the drive into the housing of a VPL servo motor for high-axis-count machines where every eliminated cable is one less failure point. DSD covers peak currents from 16 A to 24 A, spanning the motor sizes typical of packaging, converting, and assembly.

What safety comes built in?

DSD drives carry network safety over EtherNet/IP CIP Safety — SIL 3 / PLe with STO, SS1, SLS, and SDI — configured in Studio 5000 without per-drive safety wiring. The safety signals ride the same hybrid cable as motion and power, so adding safety to an axis adds no extra wire. For a loading station or inspection zone, SLS holds a reduced speed instead of dropping to STO, cutting safety-gate recovery from seconds to milliseconds.
