Product Description
The Allen-Bradley ArmorKinetix platform is a distributed servo drive system that moves the drive out of the control cabinet and onto the machine frame — directly at the motor, in an IP66/IP67-rated housing. Built on the same control engine and power stage technology as the cabinet-mount Kinetix 5700, ArmorKinetix addresses the growing tension in machine design: servo axis counts are rising, but cabinet floor space, cooling capacity, and cable routing pathways are not. For a packaging line adding four more servo axes or a material handling gantry where the drive cabinet is already at its thermal limit, distributed architecture is the answer that doesn't involve a bigger electrical room.
How does the distributed DC-bus architecture work?
A centralized DC-bus power supply — a 2198-Pxxx or 2188-Pxxx module — remains in the control cabinet, converting three-phase AC mains to a shared DC bus. From there, a single hybrid cable runs to each ArmorKinetix drive on the machine, carrying DC-bus power, 1 Gbit EtherNet/IP communication with CIP Motion, and motor feedback signals in one connector. This eliminates the separate power cable, feedback cable, and EtherNet/IP patch cable that a cabinet-mount servo axis requires — three cables per axis reduced to one. One power supply supports up to 24 distributed axes, and Device Level Ring (DLR) topology on the EtherNet/IP side provides cable-break resilience without managed switches. A separate 24V DC control power feed supplies drive logic and optional motor holding brakes.
What are the DSD and DSM variants?
ArmorKinetix is available in two physical configurations. DSD (Distributed Servo Drive) is a standalone drive module that connects to a separate VP, MP, or linear servo motor via a short motor power/feedback cable — suitable when the motor type or size is driven by the application and the drive is mounted nearby on the same machine member. DSM (Distributed Servo Motor) integrates the drive electronics directly into the motor housing of a proven VPL-series servo motor, creating a single field-replaceable unit with no external motor cable at all — ideal for high-axis-count machines where every cable eliminated is a potential failure point and an assembly step removed. DSD peak current ranges from 16 A to 24 A with continuous ratings from 5.3 A upward, covering motor sizes typical of packaging, converting, and assembly applications.
What safety functions are integrated?
ArmorKinetix drives carry network-based functional safety over EtherNet/IP CIP Safety, achieving SIL 3 per IEC 61508 and PLe per ISO 13849-1. The safety function set includes Safe Torque Off (STO), Safe Stop 1 (SS1) with timed ramp monitoring, Safely Limited Speed (SLS), and Safe Direction (SDI) — all configured in Studio 5000 Logix Designer without dedicated safety wiring to each drive. The safety signals travel over the same hybrid cable as motion control and power, so adding safety to an axis does not add a wire. For machines requiring frequent manual intervention — loading stations, tool-change positions, inspection zones — SLS allows the drive to hold a reduced speed rather than dropping to STO and requiring a re-reference cycle, cutting the recovery time after a safety gate cycle from seconds to milliseconds.
