Product Description
RSTi-EP is the slice I/O sub-platform within Emerson's broader RSTi remote I/O family — characterized by an 11.5 mm-wide per-slice form factor, a 48 Mbps internal system backplane, and a protocol-agnostic architecture where the fieldbus protocol is determined entirely by which network adapter is plugged into the first slot. The I/O slices — discrete inputs and outputs, analog inputs and outputs, high-speed counters, safety modules, power distribution modules — are identical regardless of whether the station communicates via PROFINET, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP, or PROFIBUS. For a machine builder, this means one set of I/O modules covers every control platform their customers specify: the same EP-2614 digital output slice, the same EP-1901 safety input slice, the same terminal blocks and wiring diagrams. Only the head adapter changes — a single part number swap per station, not a re-engineering of the I/O bill of materials. At 11.5 mm per slice, a fully loaded 64-module station occupies approximately 740 mm of DIN rail — roughly the width of a standard 800 mm panel section — and scans 256 discrete I/O points in 20 ms over the 48 Mbps backplane.
The protocol-agnostic value proposition
The conventional approach to multi-protocol machine variants is to maintain separate I/O part numbers for each protocol: a PROFINET version, an EtherCAT version, a Modbus TCP version of every I/O module. This multiplies the SKU count, the spare-parts inventory, and the engineering documentation. RSTi-EP's protocol-agnostic architecture decouples the I/O function from the network interface: the network adapter handles the protocol stack, the cyclic data exchange, and the diagnostic telegrams; the I/O slices handle the signal conditioning, the short-circuit protection, and the LED indicators. The slices do not know or care which protocol is running — they present the same data to whichever adapter is in slot 1. For a global machine builder with 10 machine models and 3 target control platforms (Siemens PROFINET, Beckhoff EtherCAT, Schneider Modbus TCP), the RSTi-EP approach reduces 10 × 3 = 30 I/O module types to 10 slice types plus 3 adapter types — a two-thirds reduction in SKU complexity. The adapter also provides the engineering interface: the Micro USB port and built-in web server (on the EPXETC001 and EPXPNS001) allow a technician to view the module inventory, force I/O points for commissioning, and update firmware — all without installing the controller vendor's engineering tool on a laptop.
