Product Description
The IC866 series is Emerson's integrated variable frequency drive platform — designed from the ground up as a PACSystems-native automation component rather than a standalone power conversion device. Every IC866 drive, from the 0.75 kW Frame 2 to the 250 kW Frame 8, shares the same PROFINET RT interface, the same parameter data model, and the same integration into PAC Machine Edition — the single engineering tool that configures the RX3i PLC, the QuickPanel+ HMI, and every IC866 drive on the machine network from one project file. This is the difference between a drive that happens to have a PROFINET port and a drive that was designed as a node on the PACSystems control backbone: the PLC does not talk to an IC866 through a gateway, a protocol converter, or a CSV file of register maps — it discovers the drive on the PROFINET network, auto-identifies its power rating and option cards, and presents the drive's full parameter set as named variables in the PLC tag database.
One engineering environment, from HMI to motor shaft
The IC866's deep integration with PAC Machine Edition transforms drive commissioning from a multi-tool workflow into a single-project workflow. The controls engineer creates the PLC program, designs the HMI screens, and configures every IC866 drive — including motor nameplate entry, control mode selection, acceleration/deceleration ramp times, PID loop tuning, and STO wiring validation — without leaving the engineering software. The drive's auto-tuning routine measures the connected motor's stator resistance, leakage inductance, and rotor inertia by injecting a sequence of test signals, then populates the motor model parameters automatically. This is standard on modern VFDs; what is different with the IC866 is that the auto-tuned parameters are stored in the PLC project file, not just in the drive — if a drive is replaced, the PLC reloads the parameters automatically from the project archive on the next power cycle. For a machine builder who ships 50 identical machines per year, this means the drive parameters are version-controlled in the same SVN or Git repository as the PLC code, the HMI application, and the electrical schematics.
Pre-defined function blocks: the drive as a software object
Emerson provides a library of pre-tested PLC function blocks for the IC866 that encapsulate common drive interactions: start/stop with STO monitoring, speed setpoint with ramp control, actual speed and current readback, fault code decoding and reset sequencing, and parameter read/write for infrequent operations like PID tuning. These function blocks mean the PLC programmer does not write raw PROFINET telegrams or decode bit-level status words — they drag a block onto a ladder rung or a structured text network, wire the inputs and outputs to the machine sequence logic, and the block handles the communication handshake, the timeout detection, and the error recovery. This is the difference between integrating a drive and programming a drive — and it is the reason machine builders who standardize on the IC866 across their product line invest once in the function-block-based machine template and reuse it across every machine they ship, regardless of the drive power rating or voltage class.
