The IC866-0040-4A3-2P is the 4 kW (5 HP) PROFINET-equipped drive in the 480 V IC866 family — 9.5 A output, Frame 2, IP20 open-chassis. At 4 kW, this is the smallest 480 V three-phase model covered to date, and it fills a specific role on the machine: the smart auxiliary drive. A 100 HP main motor on a process skid is accompanied by a 5 HP cooling pump, a 5 HP lube oil pump, and a 5 HP parts feeder — all running on the same 480 V three-phase distribution, all controlled from the same PROFINET network, all sharing the same control cabinet. The Frame 2 enclosure is roughly the size of a hardcover book — 100 mm wide × 300 mm high × 180 mm deep — and four of them fit side by side in the width of a single Frame 6 drive.

Why PROFINET on a 5 HP drive?

At 4 kW, the cost of the PROFINET option card is a meaningful fraction of the drive cost — and the factory-installed -2P variant commits to that cost upfront. The justification is operational, not capital: a PROFINET-connected auxiliary drive reports its output current, DC bus voltage, heatsink temperature, and fault code to the PLC on every cyclic data exchange — no separate analog input channels consumed on the PLC for current monitoring, no discrete input for fault relay status, no separate temperature sensor wired back to an analog card. When the lube oil pump drive on a 100 HP compressor skid trips on undervoltage, the PLC knows which drive tripped, why it tripped, and whether the fault is resetable — all over the same Ethernet cable that carries the speed setpoint. For an OEM whose machine ships to a customer 500 km away, that diagnostic data arriving over the VPN into the PLC's web server is the difference between a 30-minute phone call and a 3-day service trip. The PROFINET card earns its keep on the first avoided site visit.
