The 600 V class is the native voltage for Canadian industrial distribution and for many North American heavy-industrial sites where 575 V three-phase is the standard service voltage. In these environments, specifying a 600 V drive means the machine connects directly to the plant bus — no step-down transformer, no separately derived system, no additional floor space for voltage conversion. The IP55 enclosure extends this simplicity to the physical installation: the drive mounts on the machine frame or on a nearby wall in the production environment, eliminating a remote control cabinet and the associated 22 A motor cable run.

600 V vs. 480 V at the same power level

At 15 kW, the 600 V IC866 draws 22 A — roughly 27% less current than the 30 A required by the equivalent 480 V model (IC866-0150-4A3). This current reduction flows through every component of the power system: smaller input fusing and circuit breakers, lighter-gauge input and motor cabling, lower I²R losses in long cable runs, and reduced voltage drop at the motor terminals. For an OEM building a machine destined for a 600 V plant, the 603-series drive avoids forcing the customer to install and maintain a 600-to-480 V step-down transformer — a cost that can exceed the drive itself, occupying floor space and generating heat. The trade-off is sourcing: 600 V three-phase is less common than 480 V in U.S. light-industrial facilities, and replacement drives are less likely to be available from local distributor stock. The decision to specify 600 V is essentially a decision about where the machine will live: Canada, mining, metals, and heavy process industries run on 600 V; general U.S. manufacturing runs on 480 V.

Inside the 603 PN code

The 600 V class IC866 uses a slightly different part-number segment than the 240 V and 480 V classes. The middle segment 603 decodes as: 6 = 500–600 VAC voltage class, 0 = no integral EMC filter (external filter available as a line-side accessory), 3 = three-phase input. By contrast, the 240 V and 480 V classes use the segment format 2A3/4A3 where the A indicates a built-in Class C2 EMC filter. The suffix 5P selects the IP55/NEMA 12K enclosure with PROFINET RT communication. All other IC866 platform features remain identical: STO, PID, keypad, modular expansion slots, and the same control firmware — the drive behaves identically to any other IC866 from the PLC programmer's perspective, regardless of voltage class.
