Product Description
ControlBridge is Black Box's Ethernet-based control and monitoring ecosystem — a unified platform where touch panels, button keypads, and embedded processors manage the full range of equipment found in modern control rooms and smart buildings. Rather than running separate interfaces for KVM routing, AV switching, lighting, and HVAC, operators use one consistent touch interface across all subsystems. The platform is built around wired PoE connectivity — no batteries, no wireless dropouts — which matters in 24/7 mission-critical environments.
What hardware components make up a ControlBridge system?
The system has three building blocks. Touch panels come in 7-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch sizes, all with projected capacitive touch, edge-to-edge glass, built-in microphone and speakers, and light/proximity sensors for auto-dimming and wake-on-approach. Two processors handle logic and I/O: the CB-CP100 for small to mid-sized rooms (3 serial ports, 8 versatile I/O, IR capture), and the CB-CP200 for larger deployments (general I/O plus 2 relay outputs, 4 IR/serial ports). Wired 8-button desktop and in-wall keypads provide tactile control for frequently used functions. Mobile devices running iOS, Android, or Windows can join the system with a per-device license.
What can ControlBridge actually control in a control room?
The platform's I/O versatility is the key. Versatile ports on the processors can be configured as digital inputs (contact closures, pushbuttons, 24 V signals), analog inputs (voltage, current loop, resistance/temperature sensors), digital outputs (relay coils, LED indicators), or IR outputs — all from the same physical connector. This means one CB-CP200 can simultaneously switch KVM sources, raise a projector screen via relay, dim lights via DALI, and adjust HVAC setpoints via ModBus. The processors also support bidirectional RS-232/485 for serial-controlled equipment. Deep integration with Black Box's DKM and Emerald KVM systems adds auto-discovery of KVM devices and one-touch source routing across multiple displays.
How is the system programmed and managed?
Configuration is done through ControlBridge Builder, a browser-based software suite. The integrated web server on each processor handles setup, firmware updates, and real-time monitoring. Role-based access control restricts what each operator can see and control — critical in multi-operator control rooms where different consoles manage different security domains. The real-time clock enables scheduled automation: lights off at 8 PM, HVAC setback on weekends, display walls powered down overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ControlBridge require a dedicated network?
Not necessarily — it operates over standard TCP/IP Ethernet and can coexist on an existing corporate or control-room LAN. However, for mission-critical applications, Black Box recommends a dedicated VLAN or physically separate control network to isolate control traffic from video and data streams. All components are PoE-powered, so a PoE-capable switch (802.3af/at) is required.
Can third-party IP devices be controlled without a software driver?
ControlBridge includes native drivers for common AV, KVM, and building automation protocols (DALI, KNX, ModBus, EnOcean). For devices without standard protocol support, the versatile I/O ports can interface at the electrical level — relay closures, IR commands, or serial strings — providing control without a software driver. Custom control modules can also be developed for IP-enabled devices with published APIs.
