Product Description

The ULR series is Shibaura Machine's ultra-precision grooving lathe for cutting the micro-grooves on optical-film roll molds. Linear motors drive the X and Z axes, the spindle runs on a hydrostatic bearing, and the tool-rest B-axis rides an aerostatic bearing.

Why linear motors and hydrostatic bearings for optical rolls?

A ballscrew-driven axis has backlash and quadrant glitches, which show up as irregular grooves on the roll. The ULR's linear motors and hydrostatic spindle resolve 0.01 µm with no mechanical play, so the grooves are cut smooth and uniform — the accuracy an optical sheet depends on.

  • 150-650 mm roll diameter
  • 0.01 µm resolution, linear-motor axes
  • Hydrostatic spindle, aerostatic B-axis
  • Fanuc 30i-B control

Against a ballscrew-driven lathe, the ULR eliminates backlash and quadrant error — the reason an optical roll molds a flawless sheet.
