The Siemens 7KT1661 is the non-MID Modbus RTU variant of the PAC1600 three-phase series with 5 A CT input. It puts energy registers, instantaneous electrical values, and status information onto an RS-485 bus — the entry point for Modbus-based energy monitoring when billing certification is not required.

Modbus RTU with 5 A CT input — what combination of needs does this serve?

This combination fits applications where the load exceeds 80 A (requiring external CTs) and the automation system speaks Modbus. The 5 A input accepts standard /5 A secondary current transformers, so the meter scales to any load size — 200 A, 400 A, 1000 A — by selecting the appropriate CT ratio. On the communication side, Modbus RTU/ASCII over RS-485 delivers register-level access to total and partial energy counters, per-phase instantaneous values (voltage, current, power, power factor), frequency, and diagnostic registers. Integration with Siemens and third-party PLCs uses standard Modbus RTU library blocks — no proprietary drivers needed.

When does choosing non-MID make sense for a Modbus meter?

Skip MID when the energy data is used for operational purposes rather than financial settlement: machine-level energy tracking for ISO 50001, load profiling for production planning, or internal cost allocation where readings are indicative rather than invoiced. The non-MID 7KT1661 operates on both 50 Hz and 60 Hz supplies (unlike the MID-locked 50 Hz variants), making it suitable for 60 Hz markets and generator monitoring. It also costs less than the MID-certified 7KT1662. If billing requirements emerge later, the 7KT1662 is pin-compatible and dimensionally identical — a direct swap.

Yes. The meter is a standard Modbus RTU slave. Siemens S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLCs with an RS-485 communication module (CM 1241 RS485 or CM PtP) read the Modbus registers directly using the standard Modbus RTU library blocks. The register map is documented in the PAC1600 equipment manual.

What baud rates and Modbus settings are supported?

Baud rates from 2400 to 38400 bps, configurable parity (none/even/odd), 1 or 2 stop bits. Factory default is typically address 1, 9600 baud, even parity, 1 stop bit. All settings are configurable via the front-panel LCD menu or through Modbus itself.
