Product Description

The DINGS DS-OLS2-FPD is an entry-level digital stepper driver in the OLS series, targeting small-frame NEMA 8–17 hybrid stepper motors in DC-powered precision instruments. The 32-bit DSP core implements anti-resonance algorithms that actively damp the mid-band oscillation inherent to open-loop stepper systems — the effect is most noticeable in the 0.5–2 rev/s speed range, where an undamped driver would produce audible noise and uneven motion that degrades fluid dispensing, optical alignment, or sample-handling accuracy. Combined with microstepping up to 25,600 pulses per revolution, the driver delivers smooth velocity profiles from in-vitro diagnostic pipetting speeds to pick-and-place indexing moves.

How do the DIP switches configure the driver?

All operating parameters are set via an 8-position DIP switch bank — no software configuration required. Switches 1–3 select phase current from eight values between 0.3 A and 2.2 A peak, switches 4–6 select the microstep subdivision from full-step through 25,600 pulses/rev, switch 7 toggles between single-pulse (Step + Direction) and dual-pulse (CW/CCW) command modes, and switch 8 activates a self-test mode that runs the motor through a factory-defined motion sequence for commissioning and fault isolation. This hardware-only configuration model is intentional: in medical and laboratory OEM instruments, once the driver is set and validated, the DIP switch settings are documented in the instrument's service manual and never changed in the field, ensuring reproducible motor behaviour across production units.

What motor wiring configurations are supported?

The DS-OLS2-FPD drives 4-wire, 6-wire, and 8-wire 2-phase hybrid stepper motors. For 6-wire motors, the driver can be connected in either series (full-coil) or half-coil configuration — series yields higher torque at low speeds, half-coil delivers better high-speed performance at the cost of peak torque. For 8-wire motors, parallel connection draws the full 2.2 A per phase for maximum torque across the speed range. The driver automatically detects motor phase continuity on power-up and triggers the alarm output if an open or shorted phase is detected, preventing a failed motor from going unnoticed in an automated workflow.
