Product Description
The 5UB1942 is the flagship of the aluminum metallic 5UB194x range — the only DELTA i-system socket that combines all four premium features: varistor-based overvoltage protection, increased touch protection, a dual-function status display, and an integrated labeling field. At 111g, it is the heaviest aluminum metallic Schuko socket Siemens makes.
What makes the dual-function display different from a simple LED?
The 5UB1941's operating display is a single-state LED: green means the socket has voltage, dark means it does not. The 5UB1942's dual-function display reports two independent conditions. Green confirms the socket is live, same as the 1941. But a second state tracks the varistor: if the display goes dark while other sockets on the same circuit still have power, the surge protection element has sacrificed itself. The socket continues delivering power — the varistor is wired in parallel, not in series — but surge suppression is gone until you replace the insert. A single-state LED cannot make this distinction; you would need a separate surge protector with its own indicator to know the protection status.
How does the 5UB1942 differ from the 5UB1936?
Both are aluminum metallic Schuko sockets with overvoltage protection and a status display. The difference is increased touch protection: the 5UB1942 has it, the 5UB1936 does not. The 5UB1936 (112g) relies on the varistor display as its headline safety feature; the 5UB1942 (111g) layers passive contact shrouding on top of surge protection. The 1g difference is negligible — these are practically the same mass with different internal configurations. Choose the 5UB1942 if you want touch protection and surge suppression together. Choose the 5UB1936 if you only need the surge protection and prefer the simpler contact geometry.
What does cascaded surge protection mean in practice?
Per IEC 60364-5-53, surge protection is designed in tiers. A Type 2 SPD in the distribution panel handles the bulk energy of a surge — perhaps 80–90% of it. But the residual let-through energy, while reduced, can still damage sensitive electronics. The 5UB1942's varistor, as a Type 3 point-of-use device, clamps that residual energy right at the equipment. Think of it as the last meter of defense: the panel SPD takes the big hit, the socket catches what slips through. Neither alone is complete protection for sensitive loads. Together they form the layered approach the standard envisions.
