The TECO AP series represents a significant step forward in panel-mount PLC technology, engineered from the ground up to deliver high-speed processing and comprehensive motion control in a compact, modular form factor. It is a controller built for the demands of modern manufacturing—where cycle times are shrinking, precision requirements are growing, and seamless integration with drives and HMIs is non-negotiable. The AP series consolidates logic, motion, PID process control, and multi-protocol communication into a single platform, reducing component count and simplifying control panel design.
At the core of the AP series is a high-performance processor capable of executing basic instructions in just 0.18 microseconds. This speed translates directly into faster scan times and more responsive control, even as program complexity increases with advanced application instructions. For motion-intensive applications, the controller integrates 200kHz high-speed counters and 2 to 4 channels of 200kHz pulse outputs. These hardware resources, combined with built-in linear and circular interpolation functions, allow the AP series to directly command servo and stepper motor drives for precise positioning, pick-and-place operations, and multi-axis coordination—tasks that would otherwise require a dedicated motion controller.
Process control is equally well-supported. An integrated PID algorithm with auto-tuning capability is available for regulating temperature, humidity, pressure, and flow. This allows the same PLC running a packaging machine to also manage the heater temperature of a sealing bar or the pressure of a pneumatic actuator, without additional hardware. The controller also includes a real-time clock for time-based scheduling and data logging, floating-point math for complex calculations, and PWM outputs for proportional control of valves and actuators.
Scalability is a key design principle. The AP series is available in a wide range of base module sizes, from compact 10-point units to 60-point workhorses. Using expansion modules, the system can be scaled up to 384 digital I/O points. For analog-intensive applications such as multi-zone temperature monitoring or process instrumentation, the system supports up to 56 analog input channels and 8 analog output channels, all with 12-bit resolution. Communication is handled through a comprehensive suite of ports and protocols: RS485 and MiniUSB are standard on the base unit, with expansion options for Ethernet, RS232, and RS422. Protocol support includes Modbus RTU and TCP/IP, as well as CANopen, ensuring that the AP series can communicate seamlessly with TECO's own drives and HMIs, as well as third-party automation equipment. The entire system shares a uniform 90mm height, simplifying DIN-rail mounting and panel layout.
Programming is accomplished via TECO's proprietary software, which supports ladder diagram, instruction list, and structured text languages. This flexibility allows engineers to choose the most efficient approach for each task—whether a simple relay-replacement circuit, a complex mathematical algorithm, or a structured state machine. The AP series is well-suited for a broad range of applications, from standalone machine control and conveyor systems to packaging equipment, textile machinery, and HVAC control.
