Product Description

The Eurotherm Piccolo series is a universal-input PID temperature and process controller for industrial automation applications. Available in three DIN panel sizes—P116 (1/16 DIN, 48×48 mm), P108 (1/8 DIN, 48×96 mm), and P104 (1/4 DIN, 96×96 mm)—the series combines full PID control with features typically found only in higher-end controllers: heater break detection, energy usage estimation, analogue retransmission, and a ramp-soak timer with soft-start. All models include a tri‑color LED display for process value, setpoint, and output indication at a glance. The IP66-rated wipedown front fascia allows installation in washdown and dust-exposed environments. A standard 3‑year warranty and global support network provide confidence for OEM deployments and end-user maintenance teams.

Universal PID Temp. Regulator, Auto-Tune, Heater Break, IP66 – Piccolo | Eurotherm

Advanced PID Control with Overshoot Suppression

  • Full Autotune: The controller automatically calculates the optimal PID parameters by measuring the thermal response of the connected load during a tuning cycle. This eliminates manual PID tuning and ensures stable regulation even for users without process control expertise. The autotune function can be activated at any time—not just during initial commissioning—so it also accommodates changes in load characteristics due to varying product dimensions, ambient conditions, or heater aging.
  • Unique Cutback System: The built‑in cutback function actively suppresses temperature overshoot during startup and after process disturbances. When the controller detects that the process value is approaching the setpoint too rapidly, it temporarily reduces the PID output to prevent the temperature from exceeding the target. This is particularly valuable for low‑inertia heating systems such as packaging sealing bars, hot runner nozzles, and small laboratory ovens where overshoot can damage product or waste energy.
  • Ramp‑Soak Timer and Soft‑Start: The controller can execute time‑based temperature sequences using ramp and soak segments—gradually increasing or decreasing temperature in controlled steps before holding at defined levels. The soft‑start function limits the initial power output during cold starts to reduce thermal shock on heating elements and prevent nuisance circuit breaker tripping. A delay timer allows the controller to begin heating at a scheduled time, enabling unattended startup of pre‑heating processes.

Universal Input and Flexible Output Architecture

  • Universal Sensor Compatibility: A single Piccolo controller accepts thermocouples, RTDs, and standard linear inputs (mA, mV, volts) without hardware modification. Input type and range are fully configurable through the front‑panel menu or iTools configuration software. This reduces the variety of controller models that need to be stocked for different sensor types across a multi‑process plant.
  • Multiple Output Options: Models can be ordered with relay outputs, logic/SSR drive outputs, Triac outputs, or DC linear outputs (4–20 mA or 0–10 V) for both heating and cooling control. The P116 (1/16 DIN) provides up to 3 outputs, while the P108 and P104 provide up to 4 outputs. Each output can be independently assigned to PID heating, PID cooling, ON/OFF control, or alarm functions.
  • Analogue and Digital Retransmission: The controller can retransmit the setpoint, process value, or output power as a DC linear signal or digital signal, enabling seamless integration with chart recorders, PLCs, and higher‑level SCADA systems without additional signal processing hardware.

Heater Diagnostics and Energy Monitoring

  • Heater Failure and Leakage Detection: A current transformer (CT) input monitors the load current flowing through the heating element. If the heater current falls below a configurable threshold while the controller is calling for heat—indicating a broken heater, degraded heating element, or SSR failure—an alarm is triggered immediately. The CT input also detects heater leakage current to ground, providing early warning of insulation degradation before it develops into a full short‑circuit fault. Both alarms can be configured to activate a dedicated output relay, illuminating warning indicators or triggering an automatic shutdown sequence.
  • Energy Usage Estimation: The controller calculates and logs the estimated energy consumption of the connected heating load. This data can be displayed on the front panel, transmitted via Modbus, or retransmitted as an analogue signal, enabling process engineers to track energy costs per batch and identify opportunities for process optimization.
  • Sensor Break Detection: If a sensor failure is detected—open circuit, short circuit, or out‑of‑range reading—the controller can be configured to cut power to the heating element, hold the output at a safe level, or continue operating at a predefined manual output setting to maintain process continuity until the sensor can be replaced.

Communication, Configuration, and System Integration

  • RS485 Modbus RTU: All Piccolo models support RS485 Modbus RTU for digital communication with PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems. Process values, setpoints, alarm states, and PID parameters can be read and written remotely. The communication setup is configured through the front‑panel menu without requiring external programming software.
  • iTools Wizard and Configuration Adapter: Eurotherm's iTools PC software provides an intuitive configuration interface for all Piccolo parameters, including PID tuning, alarm setup, ramp‑soak profile editing, and communication settings. A configuration adapter allows connecting the controller to a PC via USB without removing it from the control panel. The CPI clip tool enables backup and cloning of complete configuration sets across multiple controllers, reducing commissioning time in multi‑zone applications.
  • Custom Operator HMI: The operator interface can be customized to display only the parameters relevant to daily operation—setpoint, process value, alarm status—while hiding advanced configuration menus behind password protection. This prevents accidental changes by untrained operators while allowing supervisors and engineers full access to PID tuning and hardware configuration. The tri‑color LED display provides immediate visual feedback: steady green for normal operation, flashing red for alarm conditions.

DIN Panel Sizes and Environmental Specifications

  • Three Standard Panel Cut‑Outs: P116 (48×48 mm, 1/16 DIN), P108 (48×96 mm, 1/8 DIN), and P104 (96×96 mm, 1/4 DIN) cover the most common panel cut‑out dimensions found in industrial control cabinets. All models share the same user interface, parameter menu structure, and Modbus address map, allowing a single product series to serve all zones in a multi‑zone machine.
  • IP66 / NEMA 12 Front Protection: The sealed front fascia meets the highest washdown protection ratings, making the Piccolo suitable for food and beverage processing environments, pharmaceutical cleanrooms, and outdoor installations exposed to dust and rain.
  • Wide‑Range Power Supply: Standard supply voltage is 85–264 V AC at 50/60 Hz. A 24 V DC/AC variant is optionally available for low‑voltage control panels and mobile equipment applications. Power consumption is approximately 6 W (AC) or 8 W (DC).
  • Operating Environment: Rated for continuous operation from 0 to 55 °C ambient temperature with 5–95% relative humidity (non‑condensing). The controller is designed for permanent indoor installation inside an electrical enclosure.
  • Global Certifications: CE, UL, cUL, Nadcap AMS2750E, EN14597, RoHS, WEEE, REACH, and EAC certifications support deployment in regulated industries and international markets.
