Product Description

The Pulsar Measurement Ultimate controller is an all‑in‑one ultrasonic pump controller that fundamentally redefines how small pump stations are automated. Traditionally, automating a pump station requires a PLC for logic control, a separate ultrasonic level transmitter, a flow meter, an RTU for remote telemetry, and often a touch‑panel HMI for local operation—each requiring its own wiring, programming, and integration effort. The Ultimate controller consolidates all of these functions into a single, compact device. Two built‑in dB transducer inputs connect directly to ultrasonic level and velocity sensors for non‑contacting level measurement and flow calculation. Eight SPDT relays provide direct pump start/stop control with 5 A switching capacity, while eight digital inputs accept contact closures from float switches, pressure sensors, and other binary devices. The integrated web server allows remote monitoring, setpoint adjustment, and data viewing from any browser, and the full‑color touchscreen HMI provides local operator access with intuitive menu‑based configuration—no PLC ladder logic or structured text programming required.

Ultrasonic Pump Controller & RTU, Level & Flow, No PLC, Web – Ultimate | Pulsar

One Device Replaces a PLC, HMI, RTU, and Level Controller

  • Integrated Web Server and Touchscreen HMI: The Ultimate controller provides both local and remote operator access without separate hardware. The touchscreen HMI displays real‑time level, flow, pump status, and alarm conditions. The dedicated web server allows operators to access the same data remotely via a standard browser—on a PC, tablet, or smartphone—without installing proprietary SCADA software. All parameters, including setpoints, alarm thresholds, and pump sequencing logic, can be configured through the touchscreen with simple menu navigation, eliminating the need for PLC programming expertise.
  • Built‑In RTU with Multi‑Protocol Communication: The controller includes industrial telemetry as standard. DNP3 Level 4 and WITS Protocol 1.1 are supported natively via Ethernet, providing direct integration with utility SCADA masters. Optional communication modules add Modbus RTU, TCP/IP, Profibus V1, and integrated GSM/GPRS/PSTN cellular modems for pump stations where wired network connectivity is unavailable. An optional infrared camera port allows real‑time remote visual inspection of the wet well or sump—operators can visually verify pump station conditions from the control room without dispatching a field crew.
  • Expandable I/O for Complex Applications: The modular design allows I/O expansion via peripheral modules: additional relays, analog inputs/outputs, digital inputs, and pump power monitoring can be added to match the exact requirements of each pump station. A single Ultimate controller can manage multiple pumps in duty/standby/assist rotation, with sequencing logic that equalizes pump run hours and provides automatic failover if a duty pump trips.

Intelligent Pump Control That Reduces Energy and Maintenance Costs

  • Patented Energy Cost Avoidance: The Ultimate controller incorporates patented algorithms that optimize pump scheduling to avoid operation during peak electricity tariff periods. It can be programmed to prioritize pumping during off‑peak hours when energy rates are lower, while maintaining safe wet well levels—directly reducing electricity costs without compromising operational safety.
  • Pre‑Blockage Detection and Pump Reversing: A unique pre‑blockage detection function monitors pump performance trends and identifies early signs of clogging or ragging before a complete blockage occurs. When a developing blockage is detected, the controller can automatically initiate a pump reversing sequence—briefly running the pump in reverse to clear debris from the impeller—preventing a costly emergency call‑out and extending pump service life.
  • Most Efficient Pump Selection: In multi‑pump installations, the controller continuously evaluates each pump's performance characteristics and automatically selects the most energy‑efficient pump (or pump combination) to meet the current demand. This dynamic selection ensures that the pump with the best efficiency curve for the current flow rate is always prioritized, reducing overall energy consumption compared to fixed‑sequence rotation.
  • Automatic Resets and Spill Prediction: The controller can automatically reset pump trips under safe conditions, reducing unnecessary site visits. Spill prediction algorithms analyze inflow rates and provide early warning of potential overflow conditions, allowing operators to take preventive action before a spill occurs.

Asset Management and Data Logging for Predictive Maintenance

  • Built‑In Asset Management Data: The Ultimate controller continuously calculates and stores asset management data for each connected pump: total run hours, number of starts, cumulative flow volume, energy consumption estimates, and performance trend data. This data is accessible locally via the HMI and remotely via the web server, providing maintenance teams with a complete operational history for condition‑based maintenance planning.
  • Flow Monitoring and Compliance Reporting: Using ultrasonic velocity sensors or external flow meters connected via the 4‑20 mA inputs, the controller calculates and logs flow rates with 0.1% resolution. This data supports regulatory compliance reporting for discharge permits and provides a continuous record of pump station throughput for capacity planning.
  • Camera Integration for Remote Visual Verification: The optional infrared camera connects to the dedicated camera port and provides real‑time still images or video of the wet well, sump, or pump station interior. Operators can remotely verify water levels, inspect for debris accumulation, and confirm pump operation without traveling to the site, reducing vehicle mileage and enabling faster response to alarm conditions.

Designed for the Harsh Realities of Pump Station Environments

  • Rugged Industrial Construction: The polycarbonate enclosure (available in wall‑mount configuration at 124 × 224 × 114 mm and weighing only 2 kg) is rated for indoor or protected outdoor installation. The operating temperature range of -30 °C to +55 °C covers the full spectrum from unheated pump stations in cold climates to sun‑exposed kiosks in desert environments. Eleven cable entry points (9 × M20 and 2 × M16 knockouts on the underside) provide flexible conduit routing.
  • Flexible Mounting Options: Standard wall mount suits pump station kiosks and equipment rooms. The fascia mount option provides a 116 × 179 mm cutout for flush panel installation, with the controller protruding only 34 mm in front of the panel and 80 mm behind—ideal for integrating into custom control panels.
  • CE Marked and Safe‑Area Compatible: The controller carries CE certification and is designed for safe‑area operation. Compatibility with Pulsar's range of approved dB ultrasonic transducers ensures full‑system reliability for level and flow measurement in wastewater, clean water, and industrial fluid applications.

Applications

  • Wastewater pump stations (wet wells and sumps) where reliable level monitoring, pump sequencing, and remote alarm notification are essential
  • Rainwater and stormwater drainage pumping systems requiring high‑capacity pump control and spill prediction for flood prevention
  • Clean water booster stations needing pressure management, flow monitoring, and pump efficiency optimization
  • Industrial effluent and chemical transfer pump control (as demonstrated in the Changshu, Jiangsu Province case study for rainwater drainage and flow monitoring at a chemical plant)
  • Any small to medium pump station application where eliminating separate PLC programming, HMI configuration, and RTU integration reduces capital cost and accelerates commissioning
