Product Description

The OS32C is a Type 3 safety laser scanner designed to protect personnel from hazardous machinery by monitoring a 270° planar zone around the sensor. Unlike surveying-grade 3D scanners that capture point clouds for measurement, the OS32C makes a binary safety decision — stop the machine if a person enters the protected area — and does so within a certified response time. It is used extensively in robotic workcells, automated assembly lines, and AGV/AMR collision avoidance where hard guarding is impractical.

What does Type 3 mean, and when is it sufficient?

IEC 61496 classifies electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) into Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4, differentiated by their diagnostic coverage and fault tolerance. A Type 3 scanner like the OS32C uses dual-channel architecture with continuous self-testing — if any fault is detected, the OSSD safety outputs switch OFF within the configured response time. This yields PLd (Category 3) per ISO 13849-1 and SIL 2 per IEC 61508. Type 3 is sufficient for most industrial automation applications where injury severity is reversible (e.g., bruising, pinching) but not for applications requiring the highest integrity (PLe/SIL 3), such as press brakes or explosive atmospheres — those need a Type 4 device.

How does the 270° detection zone work in practice?

The OS32C scans a single horizontal plane with 0.4° angular resolution over 270°. The operator configures one safety zone — the area where detection triggers an immediate stop — and up to two warning zones, where detection triggers an audible or visual alert without stopping the machine. The safety zone can extend to 3 m at 50/70 mm resolution or 1.75 m at the finer 30 mm resolution (capable of detecting a human finger). The -4M variant extends the safety zone to 4 m. With 70 configurable zone-set combinations, the scanner can switch between different protection patterns as the machine cycles through operating modes — tight perimeter during high-speed motion, wider perimeter during slow homing — triggered by discrete inputs or over EtherNet/IP.

What prevents false trips from dust or physical displacement?

The OS32C includes a Pollution Tolerance Mode that discriminates between solid objects and transient dust plumes or welding sparks, reducing nuisance stops without compromising detection of actual intrusions. Reference Boundary Monitoring continuously verifies that the scanner itself has not been knocked out of position — if the scanned reference boundary deviates by more than the set tolerance (e.g., 100 mm), the scanner faults. This is critical in environments where forklifts or tool changes risk bumping the sensor. Eight sector indicators on the scanner face show the direction of an intrusion at a glance, helping operators locate the cause of a stop without accessing the safety PLC.
