The Allen-Bradley 1752 SmartGuard 600 fills the gap between single-function safety relays and full-scale GuardLogix safety PLCs. It is sized for machines with a dozen or so safety devices — a few E-stop buttons, a couple of gate interlocks, a light curtain, and maybe a safety mat — where hardwiring individual relays would consume too much panel space and offer too little diagnostic information, but a rack-based safety PLC would be overkill in cost and complexity. The SmartGuard programs via RSNetWorx for DeviceNet using a graphical function-block editor, making safety logic visible and auditable rather than hidden in relay wiring.

What distinguishes the two SmartGuard 600 models?

The 1752-L24BBB communicates exclusively over DeviceNet and USB, suitable for standalone safety cells where the SmartGuard is the sole safety controller and machine status is reported to a standard PLC or HMI via DeviceNet. The 1752-L24BBBE adds an EtherNet/IP port with 10/100 Mbps auto-negotiation, supporting up to 2 CIP connections and 3000 packets per second — useful when the SmartGuard must exchange safety interlock status with other SmartGuard or GuardLogix controllers across a plant network, or when EtherNet/IP is the plant-wide networking standard. Both models share identical safety I/O and performance ratings.

How is the safety logic engineered?

The SmartGuard 600 is configured via RSNetWorx for DeviceNet, using a library of certified safety function blocks — emergency stop, gate monitoring, light curtain, two-hand control, safety mat, muting, and more. The logic is verified and locked before download; the controller compares a stored signature against the running configuration on every power-up to detect tampering. Safety I/O includes 16 sinking inputs with 4 pulse test sources (T0–T3) that can test for cross-faults and short circuits on input wiring, plus 8 sourcing outputs rated at 0.5 A each. The 20-year proof test interval reflects the high reliability of the solid-state output architecture: PFH is 3.9 × 10⁻¹⁰ per hour, corresponding to a PFDavg of 3.4 × 10⁻⁵.

How does it integrate with a standard PLC?

While the SmartGuard 600 executes the safety function independently, it publishes status, diagnostic, and I/O data to a standard PLC (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, or any EtherNet/IP scanner) over DeviceNet or EtherNet/IP. This allows the machine's standard control system to react to safety events — inhibiting motion commands, displaying fault messages on the HMI, logging safety activations — without compromising the functional independence of the safety loop. Safety interlocking between multiple SmartGuard controllers or with GuardLogix is supported over CIP Safety on both DeviceNet and EtherNet/IP, enabling distributed safety architectures across larger machines or interconnected cells.
