In the Kintex-7 family, speed grades -1L (low power), -1, -2, and -3 exist. The -3 grade is the fastest, with typical logic performance 15–20% higher than -2. The XC7K160T-3FBG676E combines that top speed grade with an extended temperature range (0°C to 100°C) — not as wide as industrial (–40°C to 100°C), but still a step up from commercial (0°C to 85°C).

Who Needs Extended Temperature but Not Full Industrial

Extended temperature (0°C to 100°C) is often specified for telecom outdoor cabinets, baseband units, and networking gear that must survive hot summers but never see freezing temperatures. If your equipment stays in a controlled shelter or a data center, commercial grade is sufficient. But if it sits in a non‑air‑conditioned roadside cabinet that can reach 70°C ambient, the 100°C junction rating gives you a safety margin.

The Performance of -3 Speed Grade

The 1412 MHz maximum frequency is for internal logic (using global clock nets). Real designs typically achieve 500–800 MHz depending on logic depth. The high speed enables 10G Ethernet MACs, PCIe Gen2/3, and high‑rate DSP filters. The transceivers on the “T” version (the “T” in XC7K160T) run up to 12.5 Gb/s, allowing direct connection to 10GBASE‑R optics.

If your design does not need the extra 15% speed, the -2 grade is cheaper and consumes less power. But for timing‑critical applications where every picosecond counts, or for designs that already run at the limit with -2, the -3 grade provides the headroom to meet timing without major re‑architecture.
