The Watlow WATROD tubular heater delivers versatile and economical heating solutions for immersion and air heating applications. Available in single-ended or double-ended termination styles, these heaters accommodate virtually the entire range of industrial heating requirements. Single-ended configurations feature both terminals at one end with the opposite end sealed against contamination, while double-ended designs offer exceptional adaptability for field bending.

Construction and Performance

Both configurations share advanced construction features that ensure long service life. The nickel-chromium resistance wire is precisely centered within the heater sheath and electrically insulated with compacted, high-grade magnesium oxide (MgO), delivering superior dielectric strength and heat transfer. Standard 12-inch (305mm) flexible lead wires are crimp-connected to terminal pins with silicone-impregnated fiberglass oversleeves. Single-ended heaters achieve watt densities up to 45W/in² (6.9W/cm²), while double-ended units reach up to 120W/in² (18.6W/cm²).

High Temperature Capability

For applications requiring elevated temperatures, Watlow manufactures high temperature tubular heaters bridging the gap between standard tubular and multicell heaters. These units feature Inconel 600 outer sheaths with specialized internal construction, achieving maximum sheath temperatures of 1800°F (983°C) and process air heating capabilities exceeding 1300°F (704°C). Laboratory testing demonstrates approximately 50 percent longer life compared to conventional tubular designs.

Configuration Options

WATROD tubular heaters offer 36 standard bend formations, multiple sheath material options (steel, 304/316 stainless steel, Alloy 800/840, Alloy 600), and various mounting and termination configurations. Maximum sheath length reaches 275 inches for 0.375 and 0.430 inch diameters. Units can be welded to flanges and plates for mounting purposes, with enclosure options available for freeze protection applications. UL and CSA component recognition ensures compliance with safety standards.
