Product Description

The Allen-Bradley Guardmaster 440J is a hand-operated grip-style three-position enabling switch — a safety device that is neither a start button nor an emergency stop, though an E-stop-equipped model exists in the range. It is designed for applications where an operator must be inside a safeguarded space with the machinery capable of limited movement: robot teach-pendant programming, CNC setup, and automated assembly station troubleshooting. The three-position mechanism is defined by IEC 60947-5-8 and behaves differently from any conventional switch.

How does the three-position mechanism work?

The operator grips the 440J handle and squeezes the rubber trigger boot. In the rest position (released), the safety contacts are open — the machine cannot run. Squeezing to the mid-position closes the contacts, enabling motion. Squeezing further to the fully pressed position — a natural panic reaction — opens the contacts again and latches them open; releasing from fully pressed to rest does not re-close the contacts. The operator must deliberately return to the rest position and squeeze again to mid-position to re-enable the machine. This mechanical logic ensures that neither dropping the device nor crushing it in panic can create a hazardous run condition.

Which model fits my application?

Three factory-assembled variants cover the common configurations. The standard model (440J-N21TNPM) provides the three-position switch alone — suitable when the enabling function is all that is required. The jog button model (440J-N21TNPM-NP) adds a front-facing N.O. jog push-button for inch-mode control without a separate pendant button. The E-stop model (440J-N2NTNPM-NE) integrates a red mushroom-head emergency stop button with two N.C. direct-opening contacts per ISO 13850, allowing a single grip device to provide both the enabling and emergency stop functions. All models share the same IP66-rated black/grey polyamide (PA66) housing, M20 conduit entry, and 210–250 g weight. Dual-channel wiring supports Category 3 or 4 system-level safety when paired with a suitable safety relay.

What are the electrical and environmental limits?

Safety contacts are rated for 2 A resistive (DC-12/AC-12) and 1 A inductive (DC-13/AC-15) at 30V DC or 125V AC, with a minimum switching current of 5 mA at 3V. The NBR/PVC blended rubber trigger boot resists oils and mechanical wear. Operating temperature spans −10 °C to +60 °C with 45–85% relative humidity. Vibration resistance is tested to 5–55 Hz at 0.5 mm amplitude, shock to 10 g. Maximum actuation frequency is 1200 operations per hour — sufficient for continuous teach-pendant use across a production shift.
