The 6SL3520-0XM04-0AF0 is the AS-Interface variant of the SINAMICS G115D at 4 kW — the largest power rating in the G115D wall-mounted range. Delivering 20.4 A peak output in the FSB frame, it powers the heaviest conveyor sections with an integrated cooling fan for sustained high-power duty. The FSB frame with fan measures 425 × 180 × 169 mm.
Why does the 4 kW XM04 have a fan while the 3 kW XM03 does not?
At 4 kW, the power dissipation exceeds what natural convection can handle in the FSB enclosure. An integrated fan provides forced-air cooling through the heatsink, enabling continuous 4 kW operation in the same 425 mm wide wall-mounted footprint. The fan adds 35 mm to the depth (169 mm vs 134 mm for the fanless FSB) and increases the 24 V DC control supply consumption from approximately 250 mA to 510 mA (I/O variant) or 550 mA (PROFINET variant). The fan is field-replaceable as a service part.
How does the AS-Interface variant differ from PROFINET and I/O Control?
The three G115D electronic module variants share identical power hardware — including the integrated fan on the 4 kW models. AS-Interface (AF0 suffix) connects the drive over the AS-i two-wire bus, ideal for conveyor installations with many distributed drives. The PROFINET variant (AB0) adds Ethernet real-time communication and PROFIsafe for network safety.
What motors can the G115D at 4 kW drive?
The drive is preconfigured for SIMOGEAR 2KJ8 geared motors in frame sizes 71–132, available in IE3 asynchronous or IE4 synchronous reluctance variants. At 4 kW, it handles main conveyor trunk lines, incline belts, and heavy accumulation zones — the highest single-drive capacity in the wall-mounted G115D range. The integrated braking circuit supports a minimum external resistance of 80 Ω. Motor cable length is up to 15 m at standard 4 kHz pulse frequency.
What safety functions are integrated?
All G115D variants include Safe Torque Off (STO) at SIL 2 (IEC 61508) and PL d Cat 3 (EN ISO 13849-1). On the AS-Interface variant, STO is activated via fail-safe digital inputs (F-DI). PROFIsafe is available on the PROFINET variant (AB0).
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the 4 kW XM04 require a control cabinet?
No. Like all G115D drives, the XM04 is designed for cabinet-free, wall-mounted installation. IP65/IP66 protection eliminates the need for a separate enclosure. The integrated fan is sealed within the IP65 housing — no external ventilation or cabinet cooling is required.
How often does the fan need replacement?
The integrated fan is a serviceable component accessible from the front of the drive. Siemens provides a replacement fan kit. The fan run-time can be monitored via parameters, and replacement is straightforward without removing the drive from its mounting. The fan is not required for short-duration or intermittent duty — the drive can operate briefly without it under light load.
Can the 4 kW drive be used without the fan in intermittent applications?
The drive is rated for continuous 4 kW operation with the fan running. In intermittent or light-load applications, the fan may not be needed continuously — the drive's thermal monitoring will indicate if overtemperature occurs. For continuous duty at 4 kW, the fan must be operational.
