VersaMax is Emerson's modular snap-together I/O platform — a family of DIN-rail-mounted modules that cover the full spectrum of industrial I/O: discrete inputs from 24 VDC to 240 VAC, discrete outputs in relay and solid-state, analog current and voltage I/O, mixed modules combining inputs and outputs with high-speed counter and PWM capability, power supplies for the backplane, and expansion receivers for distributed racks up to 750 meters from the CPU. Every module shares the same 110 × 67 mm footprint — roughly the size of a paperback book — and snaps onto a standard DIN rail carrier. A VersaMax station can be as small as a CPU plus two I/O modules (a 10-point machine controller in 250 mm of DIN rail) or as large as 7 expansion racks with 56 modules (a 250-point distributed control system spanning a production line). The platform communicates via Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, PROFINET, or PROFIBUS depending on the CPU or Network Interface Unit (NIU) selected.

One platform, every I/O type: the machine builder's argument

The practical value of VersaMax is not any single module's specification — it is that every module type the machine builder needs exists within the same platform. A packaging machine needs 24 VDC inputs for photo-eyes, relay outputs for solenoid valves, a 4–20 mA analog output for a VFD speed reference, and a high-speed counter for an encoder on the film feed roll. In a multi-vendor I/O architecture, that is four different module families with four different wiring systems, four different spare-parts lists, and four different configuration tools. In VersaMax, it is four modules that look identical from the front, snap onto the same DIN rail carrier, plug into the same backplane, and are configured in the same engineering tool. The spare-parts argument alone drives the platform decision: stocking one IC200MDL741 (16-point 24 VDC output) covers every 24 VDC output position in every machine the factory maintains, regardless of which machine type or which model year.
