The 6SL3520-0XM01-5AB0 is a 1.5 kW SINAMICS G115D distributed frequency converter in the compact FSA frame. At 380×216×129 mm and 5.5 kg, the FSA housing is small enough to mount between conveyor side frames or on the cross-members of a roller bed — locations where a traditional VFD in a control cabinet simply would not fit. The sealed IP65/IP66 enclosure needs no additional protection, so the drive becomes part of the mechanical structure rather than requiring its own cabinet.

How much control cabinet space does a distributed drive actually save?

A traditional centralized VFD installation for a 1.5 kW motor requires: the VFD itself (roughly 70×150×150 mm inside a cabinet), a circuit breaker or fuse disconnect, a line contactor, a 24 V DC control power supply, and terminal blocks for field wiring — all inside a ventilated cabinet section of at least 400×400×250 mm. The G115D FSA replaces all of this with one 380×216×129 mm IP65 unit mounted directly on the machine. The three-phase supply and PROFINET cable come to the drive; the motor cable goes out. There is no cabinet, no cabinet cooling fan, no panel wiring labor, and no floor space consumed. For a conveyor line with 20 drive points, the space saving is measured in square meters of factory floor.

What are the practical limits of FSA passive cooling?

The FSA G115D dissipates approximately 67 W of heat at rated load through its aluminum enclosure surface. The passive cooling design works within the specified -30 to +40 °C ambient range at full rated current. In practice, the thermal limit depends on ambient temperature, mounting orientation, and airflow around the drive. Mounting the drive on a metal machine frame helps — the frame acts as an additional heat sink. If the drive is mounted in a confined space with no airflow (such as inside a fully enclosed machine housing), ambient temperature inside the enclosure can easily exceed 40 °C even if the factory floor is cooler. In such cases, either provide forced ventilation to the enclosure or up-size to an FSB drive with active cooling.

Can the 1.5 kW FSA be mounted in any orientation?

The G115D FSA is designed for vertical mounting with cable glands facing downward. This orientation ensures proper convection airflow across the cooling fins and prevents liquid ingress at the cable entries. Horizontal or inverted mounting is not recommended — the cooling design assumes vertical orientation, and the IP65/IP66 rating depends on downward-facing cable entries. The operating instructions provide a drilling template for the four M6 mounting bolts.

Does the FSA G115D support safety functions over PROFINET?

The G115D supports Safety Integrated functions including Safe Torque Off (STO) via PROFIsafe over PROFINET, provided the controlling PLC also supports PROFIsafe. STO can also be implemented through hardwired safe inputs independent of the network. The specific STO wiring method depends on the I/O suffix configuration — consult the G115D safety manual for the terminal assignment of safe digital inputs for AA0, AB0, and AF0 variants.
